Chapter Fifteen

Bruce, Stalag XVIIID, April 1942 to April 1943

Not only did Bruce swiftly acquire a reputation as a serial escaper, but he also became known as a recalcitrant. There was a good reason for this. His attitude to his capitivity—and to his captors—hardened after he received news from home in April 1942.

Bruce was always apprehensive when he opened mail from New Zealand. He had had his share of good news and bad. For this reason, he was nervous when he received four letters at once. He could tell from the handwriting that one was from his parents and another from his sister Betty. The writing on the other two was unfamiliar. He opened the envelope from his folks, ignoring the sections blacked out by the censor, and read the short letter. They addressed him using his family nickname.
